Architecture & Heritage as a Paradigm for Knowledge and Development

Lessons of the Past, New Inventions and Future Challenges

2 to 4 March 2002 at Bibliotheca Alexandrina

Honorary President

Dr. Ismail Serageldin

BACKGROUND:

Great architecture through the ages has always been able to respond to the specificities of site and cultural milieu as well as to bring the new and the innovative in a remarkable balance that delights both resident and visitor alike.   The architects who, through the ages, have been able to produce such works, combined mastery of the most advanced technology of their time with a sensitive understanding of the interaction with environment and a deep understanding of the cultural roots from which their architectural discourse emanates.  It is the nobility of their achievements that still inspire us with awe as professionals and with the exemplars of past architecture that has stood the test of time.

Today, the challenge is fundamentally the same: to innovate in ways that anchor the new in the cultural continuity and environmental exigencies of a local reality.  But far from localism, great works transcend that reality to contribute to the global heritage of all humanity.  It is the task of the architect to preserve the treasures of the past and simultaneously to realize the promise of the future.   In today's rapidly changing world it is an awesome challenge.

Today the problematique has changed: we are in the throes of a global transformation without precedent in the scope and scale of communication, of the limitless possibilities of new technologies and of the speed of the processes of change in all societies. Today's architects need more than building skills, more than appreciation of form, more than a soaring imagination.

Today's architects, functioning in the new age of knowledge based society must be able to master the tools of knowledge management, the processes of change and gain a deep understanding of the heritage that they are adding to or modifying by their work.  The training of such architects requires, we believe, a new knowledge-based perspective that is inadequately represented in many of the present training programs.

To manage this discourse with the heritage and with the new, the Mediterranean region is uniquely positioned: it is the richest storehouse of architectural heritage in the world and is undergoing dramatic change in both north and south.

The conference has two primary development objectives and/ or actions:

- To look for effective policies for mobilizing unlisted architectural heritage that are misused resources;

- Call for training the "knowledge-based architect (KBA)", the designer who is able to create architecture that will be the heritage of tomorrow.
