1- Core objective of the Course:

 

The elective course on upgrading enables the students to understand the correlation between rural and urban declines, the causes of the physical and non-physical deterioration of human settlements, and the up-to-date approaches for developing and upgrading the deteriorated areas. It enables the students to be aware about the international dialogues for formulating the upgrading policies for the less developed countries and being a pro-active and knowledgeable negotiator with international organizations, central government and the local communities for funding, formulating and implementing upgrading project in rural or urban areas.

 

2- Relation to other Courses:

 

Upgrading as planning and development technique deals with architectural, physical and non-physical planning components and therefore, the upgrading course is related to the courses of housing, physical/urban planning, architecture design studio, theory of architecture.  Besides, upgrading as a planning, development and reconstruction process depends on the students' basic information on building construction, environmental, and legislative courses.

 

3- Teaching methodology:

 

It is based on series of lectures (13 in total), explaining to the students the array of the up-to-date theories, concepts, models, and approaches on Upgrading and its allied technical disciplines. After each lecture the students will be asked to do an application on the highlighted subject, either in term of research paper or data collection project.  

 

4- Grading system:

 

Term work: 20%

Mid-Term Exams: 40%

Final-term Exam: 40%

Deterioration of the inner-city historic core and districts of the sub-urban rings, e.g., slum and informal and districts within and outside the property tax jurisdiction.

Upgrading of physical components, e.g., houses, services, infrastructure, roads, public transport, etc

Collecting physical and non-physical data for upgrading projects; and identifying problems, potentials and proposing policies/actions/projects and programmes.

Upgrading of non-physical components, e.g., human resource development, improving the managerial system, etc.

Roles of key actors in upgrading projects/ community and individual participation/identifying needs and duties of the key actors.
